Garlic Basics

  • Hardneck Garlic: Thrives in colder climates (Zones 3–7). Produces edible flower stalks called scapes. Stronger flavor, shorter storage life.
  • Softneck Garlic: Best for warmer regions (Zones 8–12). More cloves per bulb, longer storage life, but no scapes.
  • Elephant Garlic: Not a true garlic but related to leeks. Produces giant mild-flavored cloves.

When to Plant Garlic

  • Fall is best: Plant garlic in autumn, about 4–6 weeks before your ground freezes. This gives roots time to establish before winter.
  • Spring planting: Possible in milder zones, but bulbs will be smaller.

Choosing Garlic to Plant

  • Seed Garlic: Buy from reputable seed companies or local farms. This ensures disease-free, healthy stock.
  • Skip Grocery Store Garlic: Most supermarket garlic is treated to prevent sprouting. If you do use it, choose organic and know results may vary.

Planting Garlic

  1. Prepare Soil: Garlic loves loose, well-draining, fertile soil. Work in compost before planting.

Harvesting Garlic

  • Timing: Garlic is ready when the bottom 2–3 leaves have turned brown, but the upper leaves are still green. This usually happens in mid-summer.
  • Dig, Don’t Pull: Use a garden fork to gently lift bulbs. Pulling by the tops can damage them.
  • Curing: Lay bulbs in a dry, shady, well-ventilated spot for 2–4 weeks. The papery skins dry and seal the bulbs for storage.
  • Storage: Trim roots and cut stems to 1–2 inches. Store in mesh bags, baskets, or braids in a cool, dry place.

Tips for Growing Garlic

  • 🧄 Bigger cloves = bigger bulbs. Always plant the fattest cloves.
